These little tips will help you if you are planning to schedule or already have scheduled a session with me and want to prepare —
When working outside I choose to shoot during the “golden hour,” which is within the last hour or so of the evening before sunset. (The exact time will vary, depending on what time of year it is.) It’s an absolutely magical time for lighting!! Shooting during mid day, when the sun is at its highest, will result in harsh lighting, unwanted shadows and unhappy faces. Nobody wants squinty, watery eyes in their photographs! When the sun is coming down, light is much softer and ideal for beautiful photographs.
There are so many beautiful locations around the Dayton area. Each one has it’s own unique feel and look to it. If you have a specific place in mind, let me know! If not, I’m more than happy to give you some options to choose from for your session that will best suit you and the look you’re going for.
When it comes to your outfits, I always suggest coordinating with fun colors. When choosing your color scheme, remember what season it is! Bold and warm colors, like red and orange, look beautiful in the fall, while pastels look best for spring photographs. Try to avoid very busy patterns though, because they tend to pull attention away from your beautiful faces. If you need helps or suggestions on what to wear, please ask me for help! I LOVE coordinating outfits. And don’t forget your accessories when you’re planning! Jewelry can add the perfect finishing touch to your outfit.
I like to schedule studio sessions around your child’s nap time and when they’re happiest during the day. When photographing little ones, I will provide safe props and different accessories for your session, but you should definitely consider also bringing items from home. A special blanket or little lovie will help your child feel most comfortable and might even make a photograph feel more personal and unique. Have anything particular you want to discuss? Let me know! I want to help you and your child have the best experience possible while we’re together.
Last, and most importantly — HAVE FUN! Loosen up, be yourself, and have a good time. It will show in your photographs and I promise you will love the final results! xo, Katie
